The Real BS About AI podcast returns with an episode examining how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the workforce, with a focus on its impact on women and roles that involve routine tasks.
According to The Future of Work report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 9.6 percent of women-dominated jobs may be transformed by AI, compared to 3.5 percent of jobs done by men, as more tasks become automated. Cohost Alethea Inns explains that this gap exists because women are disproportionately represented in clerical, administrative, education, and communication roles. These are areas where today’s AI can support routine tasks, streamline processes, and make everyday work easier.
Rather than framing this shift as displacement, the rise of AI creates opportunities for upskilling and adaptation. Cohost Bob Soulliere shared real-life examples from a recent department event, where female colleagues described how they’re already using AI to be more productive and efficient.
Soulliere said that one colleague now uses AI to process tickets and reports about upcoming technical changes and turn them into a concise, regular communication for IT staff across campus.
“This was a process that would take her hours,” Soulliere said. “She was using her AI tool to process all of this information in a meaningful way and get this out in a very quick turnaround. She saved herself tons of time through this process.”
Looking ahead, the future of AI and the workforce is human-driven, both Inns and Soulliere stressed. In this episode, they revisited a “skills triad” that institutions like UNLV can use to prepare students and employees for an AI-enabled workforce:
- Human judgment and contextual awareness: The “why” and the nuance AI can’t understand
- Technological and data literacy: How systems work, where data comes from, and how to verify outputs
- Ethical and sustainability awareness: Using AI responsibly as a power tool without “wrecking the house”
AI technology is here to stay, and Soulliere encouraged listeners to focus on practical, approachable ways to optimize and improve day-to-day tasks once they become comfortable with the tools.
“If you've got something that is repetitive, that is time-consuming, that is a lot of copy and paste, look for opportunities in which AI can help you solve and automate some of that process.”
The Real BS About AI publishes new episodes every two weeks, blending humor, accessibility, and practical advice to make artificial intelligence approachable for the UNLV community. View the AI Technology webpage for past podcast episodes or more information about AI at UNLV.
