Compute & Servers
Need computing power for your research?
A diverse, scalable computing ecosystem — from just‑beyond‑the‑desktop VMs to national HPC, HTC, cloud, and colocation services.
Researchers at UNLV have access to a diverse, scalable computing ecosystem designed to support a wide range of research and innovation needs — from just‑beyond‑the‑desktop capabilities to high‑performance, multi‑core systems for complex, long‑duration workloads. This environment includes local high‑performance clusters, cloud‑based platforms, and national computing resources, plus virtual machines that enable rapid deployment of customized, secure, and reproducible workflows.
Virtual Machines NO COST
UNLV provides virtual machine services at no cost to researchers. When local machines are insufficient, request a VM for server‑level performance, ideal for data processing, software development, and collaborative work with teams that need consistent, centrally managed environments.
General‑Purpose Use • No GPU Capabilities
High‑Performance Computing (HPC) CAMPUS & NATIONAL
Nevada’s research computing arm, local high‑performance clusters available to UNLV researchers.
NSF‑funded national HPC ecosystem (the follow‑on to XSEDE). Resources include SDSC Expanse, TACC Stampede 3, and PSC Bridges 2. Campus Champions can grant immediate testing access.
The National AI Research Resource pilot connects U.S. researchers and educators to compute, data, and training resources for advancing AI research.
High‑Throughput Computing (HTC) PARALLEL WORKLOADS
The OSG Consortium operates a fabric of international HTC services. Member institutions of the OSG Compute Federation contribute resources to this distributed system. OSG is also a member of ACCESS.
Formerly PRP, NRP hosts Nautilus, a ~300‑node distributed cluster with CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs, designed as a testbed for science drivers and transformative research.
Cloud Computing Services DISCOUNTS & COMPLIANT ENVIRONMENTS
UNLV has agreements with commercial cloud providers including AWS, with specific discounts and compliant environments. Faculty, staff, and affiliated researchers can request a new account or move an existing one under the UNLV organization.
House institutionally compliant equipment in enterprise‑grade data center facilities, with reliable power, cooling, and security. The team provides guidance on server design, sizing, and procurement.
Consult IT before purchasing hardware to ensure compatability.
