Data Centers Guides and Rules

Data Center Rules

  • No food, drink, or combustible material is allowed in the data centers.
  • Customers are prohibited from accessing or modifying equipment not under their control, and vendors or contractors must have an escort at all times.
  • All cabling (e.g., power, network, etc.), racking or unracking of equipment must be completed by the Operations Center. Customers are prohibited from removing floor tiles.
  • Doors shall not be propped open at any time.
  • Nothing shall be stored in the data center without first notifying the Operations Center.
  • Upon activation of a smoke detector or emergency alarm, please leave the data center by the nearest exit. Do not stop to collect your possessions. The Las Vegas Fire Department will respond to the alarm and are trained to handle any emergency.
  • While in the data center, customers should behave in a professional and safe manner.
  • Customers will adhere to safety guidelines established in UNLV Academic and Administrative Faculty Handbook,and be respectful of other users in the shared environments.

Guide to Emergencies and Planned Changes

Customers should contact the Operations Center by phone at 702-895-0749 to report unplanned events that require immediate action or immediate assistance with colocation issues such as accessing physical location, network, and power.

Customers should email the IT Help Desk to report planned changes such as:

  • Installation requests, hardware modifications, or increased infrastructure requirements
  • Addition of, removal of, or change to IP addresses, MAC addresses or hostnames for physical and virtual servers hosted in the Office of Information (OIT)data centers
  • Requests for the addition, removal, or change to ACL or firewall rules
  • Server name changes for physical labeling, IP, and switchport alias identification
  • The installation of server and storage components
  • Powering down servers during modification or removal

Data Center Firewall Guide

The Data Center Firewall Guide is an introduction to how firewall services are implemented for OIT's data centers. The guide is supplemental to any general documentation on firewalls or documentation provided by vendors for specific firewall hardware.
