Google Sites Must Be Converted to New Google Sites by December 2021

Google is retiring classic Google Sites and will only support the new Google Sites format after December 2021. Google launched the new version of Google Sites in 2016, which added new features such as real-time collaboration, a drag-and-drop interface, and optimization across desktop and mobile devices.

Classic Sites Must Be Converted Prior to December

If you are an owner of a classic Google Site that needs to remain active after December 2021, you will need to convert the site to the new Google Sites format before December to prevent any disruption.

No action is required for sites created under the new Google Sites format.

We will be sending out a separate email to all Classic Site owners with additional information and instructions on how to convert to the new Sites format. Learn more about Converting Your Classic Site to A New Site.

Transition Timeline

Google is slowly retiring classic Sites throughout the rest of the year. Please note the following milestones:

For more information about the differences between new and classic Sites, please visit the Google Sites Learning Center.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the IT Help Desk.

  • May 2021: You will no longer be able to create new sites in the classic Sites format. All sites must be created in the new Google Sites format.
  • October 2021: You will no longer be able to edit or update classic Sites.
  • December 2021: Any remaining classic Sites will be taken offline. When users try to visit a classic Site, they will no longer see the website contents. Any remaining active classic Sites (those that have been viewed or edited since January 2018) will automatically be:
    • Downloaded as an archive.
    • Replaced with a draft in the new Google Sites format for site owners to review and publish.
