Google Drive Security Update May Change Links To Your Previously Shared Files

Beginning September 13, 2021, Google will apply a security update to make file sharing in Google Drive even more secure.

This change affects non-Google document and file types (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDFs, etc.) shared from your Google Drive. If you have shared these file types from your Google Drive, others may have to request access in order to open them.

To resolve this issue, approve any new access requests as appropriate. You may also wish to provide new, updated links to files on public-facing websites, documentation, course materials, etc.

There is no impact to accessing files that:

  • You own or manage
  • Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, or Google Forms files
  • Files that have been directly shared with you

Google will begin sending emails to users who own or manage impacted Google Drive files with instructions on the steps you should take and a link to view a list of your affected files next week.

If you have any questions about this upcoming Google Drive security update, please contact the IT Help Desk.
