Classic Google Sites Must Be Converted to New Sites By January 2022

Google is slowly retiring classic Sites throughout the rest of the year.

Please note the following milestones:

  • December 2021: You will no longer be able to edit or update classic Sites.
  • January 2022: Any remaining classic Sites will be taken offline. When users try to visit a classic Site, they will no longer see the website contents. Any remaining active classic Sites (those that have been viewed or edited since January 2018) will automatically be:
    • Downloaded as an archive.
    • Replaced with a draft in the new Google Sites format for site owners to review and publish. If you have a Classic Google Site, you should convert your site to the new Sites format as soon as possible.

How Do I Convert My Classic Site?

OIT recommends converting your site as soon as possible by doing the following:

  • On a computer, open the Classic Sites Manager tool. It provides a view of your classic Sites.
  • For the sites you no longer need and wish to delete, simply select the site(s) and click Delete.
  • For the site(s) you wish to keep, select the site and click on the Conversion Tool button and follow the instructions.

About New Sites

Google launched the new version of Google Sites in 2016, which added new features such as real-time collaboration, a drag-and-drop interface, and optimization across desktop and mobile devices.
